TIS' THE SEASON FOR...FRIZZ
12.08.14

The Holidays are upon us and the one thing that gets me down is frizzy hair. Not the kind of frizz that is manageable but the kind that stands out and sticks to your face like you stuck your finger in a light socket.

In the winter we fight against frizz constantly. There are preventative measures that you can take for fighting frizz.  First off, when shampooing and conditioning always use a conditioner after washing. Frizz happens when the hair becomes dry and porous. This causes the hair to suck whatever moisture is in the air, which in return causes the shaft to swell. Unless you have very fine hair, try using a deep conditioner when washing. Make sure that your deep conditioner is one that can be used everyday or else it can harm your hair. Deep conditioner can help prevent moisture when an extra layer coats the hair shaft.

As I mentioned in my last post, product is essential prior to drying.  If you have curly hair like mine, try using a mouse to tame hair and add fullness.  Mouse works awesome on wavy or curly hair. It not only will define your natural curls but a great way to tame the unruly frizz that creeps up.

Cream and serums will be a lifesaver this winter. I have found when I apply and then blow-dry them into my hair I see maximum results.  Find a cream for your ends if they are dry.

Living in Idaho means the winter weather is cold, snowy and wet. Make sure to never leave the house with wet hair. Even if you prefer air-drying to blow-drying seal the cuticle with anti-frizz spray or serum to protect it this season.

Product tips:

-Many products that contain alcohol such as mouse and spray can cause the cuticle to swell and add frizz. Find an alcohol free mouse!

-Fly away hair? Mist a favorite shine spray onto a large comb or brush and comb hair. This will grab strands that are frizzing.

-Remember: natural oils are GREAT for fighting frizz. Don’t wash everyday. Try a dry shampoo between washes!

-Try using a super absorbent microfiber towel to dry your hair. Towel drying is rough on the hair and actually can make it more frizzy looking.

We would love to know what you have tried for frizzy hair that works so let us know!

HAIR PRODUCTS THAT ACTUALLY WORK
11.17.14

When working in the salon the number one thing I would recommend (and still do) was product. This week is ALL about product. To recreate hairstyles you NEED product. It has the ability to enhance, define, add texture, reduce frizz, and tame unruly spots.

There are a number of products I recommend and completely swear by. You will see me constantly refer to, and use many of these products with various hairstyles, because they WORK. No question about it, product is the one thing that can make or break a hairstyle. Without product it’s hard to recreate the exact look of a style.

Many times I would hear people say things like, “my hair doesn’t hold curl” or “my hair went flat after an hour” and “my backcombing won’t hold”. Product, Product, Product.

Professional Product I LOVE:

Kenra Perfect Medium Spray 13: control without the stiffness of a spray, fast-drying, movable and allows for a moveable hold, high shine. Plus, it smells good.

It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-in Product: The best leave-in product! This stuff is seriously amazing. It does 10 amazing things... repairs dry damaged hair, adds shine, smoothes & controls frizz, seals & protects hair color, detangles, prevents split ends, stops hair breakage, creates silkiness, enhances natural body, flat iron & thermal protector.

It’s A 10 Miracle Styling Cream: adds shine, controls frizz, seals the cuticle, resists humidity

Awapui Sea Salt Spray: creates tousled beachy waves, balances moisture, enhances and defines curls

Bed Head Head Rush: Shine spray that adds perfect shine to your finished hair.

Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Styling Serum: smoothes conditions, frizz free, light weight, adds shine and speeds up drying time!

Big Sexy Root Pump: Humidity resistant, volumizing mouse

Big Sexy Powder Play: Volumizing texture powder that gives incredible texture for backcombing or just a boost to your hair

Moroccan Oil: Has the ability to restore over-processed hair damaged by environmental factors and chemical procedures - it also revives, hydrates and detangles hair, wigs and hair extensions. Not to mention it helps cut down your hair's drying time.

Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask: a rich, creamy treatment, designed to hydrate and help repair damaged hair.

There is nothing better than knowing your hair is being taken care of with professional product. I will splurge every time to have great feeling hair. I have used similar products from Wal-Mart , which do the job. However, I love professional product it gives the best results when styling! No matter what style you choose it will be faster to style with product. Many products have blow dry time cut in half when you use it. I recommend professional product but I also understand that people have budgets. Try picking one professional product to try, I know you won’t be disappointed!
P.s. Leave a comment for a chance to win a professional product to try!

I was wondering if any of this stuff would have the quality of results affected by humidity? I live in the south and have had trouble with things that worked great for me in ID not working the same out here.

Hey Jamie!
First off what products were you using that worked great in Idaho? Are you trying to control the frizz? This may seem counter intuitive (because often too much moisture can be a bad thing, especially in Idaho) But when moisturizing (without overdoing it), this will actually help fight the humidity. Products are usually formulated to help control the hair without weighing it down. Tips: towel dry your hair and then add a product designed for preventing frizz. If you have curl, don't fight it this season. Play up the waves using a diffuser.
Hair can become damaged from too much straightening, drying or coloring and can become more prone to frizz. Often humidity will win. When this happens, try out some fun styles! Pulling your hair back, buns, or even a messy chignon!
